Algae & Blanketweed are a diverse group of organisms, but the types most commonly seen in garden ponds are photosynthetic i.e. they obtain food & energy in the same way as plants. The essential food includes nitrogen compounds (e.g. ammonia & nitrate) and phosphates. If the concentrations of nitrogen compounds and phosphates in the water are controlled, then there is less food for the algae and blanketweed to grow on, resulting in clearer water.

This is the mechanism by which the natural bacteria in EcoTreat Clarity work - they scavenge nitrogen compounds and phosphates from the water, thus giving algae & blanketweed little or nothing to grow on.
